Why You and Your Partner Feel Like You're Speaking Different Languages
We all know the key to a healthy relationship is to communicate. In fact, research shows that roughly 65% of couples cite communication issues as their primary reason for seeking help. But what does this really mean? What does better communication actually look like, and how do we get there? The answer might surprise you.
In my practice, I hear from many couples who seek to improve their communication. Many envision finding ways to compromise or resolve conflict. However, when I think about better communication in a relationship, it comes down to increasing your ability to have hard conversations. Too often, we are so focused on keeping the peace or avoiding conflict that it becomes difficult to actually bring important issues to one another.
I use Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) in my practice. EFT is an evidence-based approach that helps couples increase emotional safety to allow vulnerable truths to be shared. Clinical studies demonstrate that 70% to 75% of couples undergoing EFT transition from significant relationship distress to full recovery. Many couples find that with the help of this work, they are able to tell their partner things they’ve never before felt safe to share. In my experience, it feels like less of a risk to tell your partner how you’ve really been feeling over the years when you can trust that, no matter what you say, they will support you. This approach helps both partners feel a greater sense of emotional security, fostering the confidence: “I know that I can tell you anything, and it won’t change how you feel about me or jeopardize our relationship.”
This is, in essence, secure attachment. It does not mean that you and your partner don’t have difficult feelings or get into conflict after hard things are shared, but rather that the relationship doesn't feel at stake when you do.
This is why I don't simply offer basic communication tips or teach "I" statements. I firmly believe that with secure attachment as the foundation, it becomes possible to communicate difficult things to one another and trust that you will be okay.
If you are struggling with communication or feeling safe enough to share how you feel with your partner, know that couples therapy can help. It’s a brave and powerful step to strengthen your bond, and you can begin today.
